Steam uses specific image dimensions across profiles, workshops, and the store. Uploading an image that does not match the expected size means Steam will stretch, crop, or reject it. Getting the dimensions right before uploading avoids blurry or distorted results.

Steam profile pictures are 184x184 pixels. Unlike platforms that display circular avatars, Steam shows the full square image, so every pixel matters. Upload a JPG or PNG file. Steam does not support animated GIF avatars -- animated effects come from avatar frames purchased through the Steam Points Shop.
For the cleanest result, crop your image to a perfect square first, then resize to 184x184. If you upload a larger image, Steam will downscale it, which can blur fine details.
Steam profile backgrounds are 1920x1080 pixels (Full HD, 16:9 ratio). These appear behind your profile page content. Since much of the background is covered by profile elements, choose an image with the main visual interest spread across the frame rather than concentrated in one spot. Dark or muted backgrounds tend to work better because text and UI elements remain readable.
The standard artwork showcase size is 506x253 pixels. This is roughly a 2:1 ratio. Steam compresses uploaded artwork, so start with the highest quality source you can. Avoid heavy JPEG compression before upload -- let Steam handle the final compression. PNG tends to hold up better for artwork with text, sharp lines, or flat colors.
Steam Workshop preview images are 512x512 pixels for most games. Some games override this with their own requirements (check the workshop submission page for details). The preview is the first thing users see when browsing mods, so use a clear, representative image. Keep text large enough to read at thumbnail size.
If you are publishing a game on Steam, capsule images are critical for store visibility. The small capsule is 460x215 pixels, the large capsule is 616x353 pixels, and the header capsule is 460x215 pixels. Steam has strict requirements for these -- they must include the game logo, must not contain review quotes, and should not have excessive text.
