When to Use Each Image Format

PNG is best for images that need transparency or lossless quality -- logos, icons, screenshots, and graphics with sharp edges. PNG files tend to be larger because no quality is lost during encoding.

JPG (JPEG) is ideal for photographs and images with smooth gradients. It uses lossy compression, meaning some quality is sacrificed to achieve smaller file sizes. At quality 85, most images look identical to the original.

WebP is a modern format developed by Google that offers both lossy and lossless compression. WebP files are typically 25-35% smaller than equivalent JPG files at the same visual quality, making it the best choice for web performance. All modern browsers support WebP.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does converting from JPG to PNG improve quality?

No. Converting a lossy JPG to lossless PNG preserves the current quality but cannot recover detail lost during the original JPG compression. The PNG file will typically be larger. Convert to PNG only if you need transparency or want to prevent further quality loss from re-encoding.

What quality setting should I use?

For most photographs, quality 80-85 produces visually identical results at significantly smaller file sizes. Below 70, compression artifacts become noticeable. For WebP, you can often go as low as 75 without visible quality loss.

Can I convert GIF files?

You can upload GIF images, but the converter extracts the first frame only. Animated GIF conversion is not currently supported. The first frame can be converted to PNG, JPG, or WebP.

Is there a file size limit?

Since all processing happens in your browser, the limit depends on your device's available memory. Most devices handle images up to 20-30 megapixels without issues.
